My ex-ex-ex-ex best friend?

A long-lost friend of mine is back in town. To call our friendship "eventful" is a nice euphemism that I've decided to stick with. When I saw him on Friday night for the first time in almost three years, I was sort of shocked. But, also, it seemed absolutely normal. I'd seen him in that house countless times before. His face hadn't changed a bit. His smile was the same, his voice was the same, his words were even the same. He's grown up a bit, and, admittedly, so have I.

There was a moment on Friday where it felt like we hadn't seen each other in 1000 years and I was discouraged that it was too weird to return to a normal thing and we could never work it out. But on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, there were 1000 moments that felt like we'd just been dropped back into a period of time that was perfect. It helps that this whole weekend was immensely nostalgic for Encinitas summers gone he fit right in.

And I'm determined not to get invested. Who knows if, after he leaves at the end of the month, I'll see him any time in the next two years. He's talking about moving back to Encinitas when he graduates, but that's not for certain. And our eventful past leads me toward being a bit cautious in this round.

It's a weird world sometimes, don't you think?

Life, it seems.

Absolutely everything.
